1. The Best Day in Detroit / 2. The Best Night in Detroit

Reference consists of the Detroit-based artists Luke Hess & Brian Kage. The group was created for the expression of underground music and dance culture. Luke Hess is a name synonymous with the ‘dub techno’ sound but his roots go deeper than that. His continued hard work as a musician and his talent as a DJ has allowed him to release music on some of the most respected labels, and play some of the most prestigious clubs in the world. Brian Kage is the founder of the record label, Beretta music with many solo releases under his belt. Together, as Reference, they have no concern for following trends. Hess & Kage have come together to create music in it's truest form; Experimentation, soul, sweat, live instrumentation, and organic sounds all welded together to form deep and timeless music. The main concern of Reference is to stand diligently behind the foundation of underground culture and against the commercialism that longs to destroy the freedom of our senses.

Listen to "Night Lights"

Catcalling from the depths of a city seen from the outside as crumbling, sonic grooves carve a path to the soulful Detroit duo known simply as The Oliverwho Factory. First noticed across the primitive music sharing plateaus of a decade past, The Oliverwho Factory quickly gained notoriety overseas, releasing rich, mood-driven tracks on vinyl, inspired by and resonating the roots of rock, pop, jazz, and R&B. Like stepping into dreamscapes of unknown desire, the obscure flavor of OWF’s tunes keeps unconventional beauty and otherworldly adventure at the forefront of this duo’s Detroit-based soundboard.

With a scant 10 releases under their belt since they premiered on their own Madd Chaise Inc imprint in 2003, they have created a name for themselves that is rarely heard but when it is, it’s uttered in a reverent tone. Their sound is one that doesn’t fit easily into a box; its raw and electrifying blend of soulful house and jackin’ techno. The Oliverwho Factory’s disposition has been cautious and a bit resistant with any major spotlight. Whatever the reason, it’s only a matter of time before the world realizes what they’ve been missing. After sticking to small quantities of vinyl through the years they’ve made each release sought after and instant gems. Now Carl Craig has remixed the duo's "Night Lights" into what is sure to be a summer club classic. The band also contribute new track "Lady Dreamer" to this EP for Planet E.

During a stateside record buying trip in 1990, London producer Kirk Degiorgio established connections with Detroit producers Derrick May, Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson and Carl Craig. In Detroit, Kirk took noticed of the affordable studio setups he observed and consequently Kirk sold his entire record collection upon his return to London and invested in his first studio. Through labels like his own much respected A.R.T (Applied Rhythmic Techology) Kirk laid down the blueprint for a new British electronic scene alongside the likes of Black Dog and others. He also released one of the first major releases in the UK from Planet E's own Carl Craig in the form of ART 3 a four track EP that featured the seminal "Neurotic Behaviour."

Much has happened for Kirk since those early days, working under his own name and alias' like Future/ Past, Off-World, and most commonly As One, he's released numerous albums including "Reflections" (New Electronica 1994), "Celestial Soul" (New Electronica 1995), "The Message In Herbie's Shirts" (Clear 1996), "In With Their Arps, And Moogs, And Jazz And Things" (Clear 1997), "Planetary Folklore" (Mo Wax 1997), "The Art Of Prophecy" (Shield 1997), "21st Century Soul" (Ubiquity 2001), "Two Worlds" (2001), "Out Of The Darkness" (Ubiquity 2004), "Elegant Systems" (Versatile 2005) and "Planetary Folklore 2" (Archive 2006).

In the last few years Kirk also expanded his work to include acting as producer for band The Beauty Room, and on, "The Electric Institute" compilation album Kirk shocked purists with the track "Whatever Happened To the Cosmic Kid" which was co-written with Dan Keeling and Chris Martin of Coldplay. With a recent strong stream of dance floor orientated releases like "Swarm EP" for his own ART and "Time Spin / Ripple Effect EP" Amsterdam's Rush Hour Kirk has been garnering a renewed interest in his work, now he's has prepared this wonderful EP for Planet E bringing it back to where it all started.
