Course Syllabus – Introduction to Brooklyn Academy

Course Description: This class focuses primarily on
Brooklyn Academy, one of underground hip-hop’s most celebrated groups and a staple of New York hip-hop for more than a decade. While the group, composed of emcees Block McCloud, Pumpkinhead and Mr. Metaphor, has been around since 1995, the summer release of their debut album Bored of Education makes this class as essential and relevant now as ever.

This class will also address the prevalent misconceptions that the group “broke up” and that Bored of Education is their “reunion” album. “We always kept in contact with each other and did songs with each other here and there,” says Pumpkinhead. “We never broke up.”

Course History:
Pumpkinhead, Block McCloud and Mr. Metaphor all grew up in the same area of Park Slope, Brooklyn submerged in music and hip-hop culture. There had been random quasi-encounters here and there—Pumpkinhead and Met attending the same junior high school, Block hearing about Pumpkinhead’s battling abilities through a friend, etc.—but it wasn’t until an arranged freestyle battle between Block and Pump in 1995 that the two officially met. (Looking back, one will quickly concede defeat to the other but you’ll have to ask who beat who.) Around the same time, Block, Metaphor and producer Will Tell formed Word A’ Mouth, whose “Famous Last Words” unanimously became the highlight of the much-lauded Lyricist Lounge, Volume One. Finally in 1996, the trio came together to release classic underground singles like “Blind Fury” and “Russian Roulette” and a movement was born.

Not too many rappers are left from that era, yet the three Brooklyn emcees have all consistently released singles and albums to a still-hungry fanbase. Mr. Metaphor released the self-produced Metropolis in 2005 and was picked to the Rawkus 50, who put out 2007’s The Evolution of Marc Bars. In addition, his Remarcable Entertainment has been holding down the NYC party scene for a minute, coordinating and promoting parties around the city.

After destroying any emcee that battled him in ciphers, Pumpkinhead gained widespread notice with “Dynamic,” a ferocious single that was on every backpacker’s cassette tape back in the day. A born battler, the emcee has won countless competitions such as Braggin Rites and End of the Weak before releasing a string of solo albums and guest appearances. The rapper has released numerous solo albums including 2001’s The Old Testament, 2003’s Beautiful Mind and 2005’s Orange Moon over Brooklyn.

Block McCloud has been a stalwart on the scene, in various incarnations, for a minute. In addition to emceeing, the “Captain Hook” of the group has earned a name for himself in music through his melodic singing voice and knowledge behind the boards, producing and engineering numerous hip-hop albums including Jean Grae’s critically-acclaimed Attack of the Attacking Things. He released his debut album, Spittin Image in 2005.

Course Materials: Your primary source material for this class is Bored of Education, the long-awaited debut album from Brooklyn Academy. Every syllabus talks about a “return” to “real hip-hop,” so why bother repeating it here? But ask any true hip-hop head about Brooklyn Academy and watch their eyes light up in admiration. Featuring guest appearances by Jean Grae, Killah Priest, Will Tell and Non-Phixion’s Ill Bill, Bored of Education continues Brooklyn Ac’s long hit streak, marked by lyrical dexterity and clever metaphors. “We’re tired of what they’re trying to feed you and teach you now,” says Pumpkinhead. “To me, it’s horrible. The music industry right now is definitely in its worst place and they’re stil ltrying to feed you this bullsh!t. We’re taking it back to the days when heads just got up, heard a beat, drank a little beer, wrote and spit.”

Course Instructors:

Block McCloud – Block McCloud has music in his blood. The son of famous salsa singer and musician Ismael Diaz, Sr., Block’s mom would take him to Brooklyn festivals as a kid to sing. His father was known for his ability to improvise and make up songs on the spot, a skill Block has taken with him to establish himself as one of hip-hop’s premier freestyle emcees. After discovering “The Message” and “Rapper’s Delight,” he began writing rhymes at 13 and would eventually go on to battle, and beat, almost any emcee that crossed his path. The bi-lingual rapper has also released selected tracks in Spanish.

Pumpkinhead – Ever since his 6th grade Language Arts class, Pumpkinhead has always had a fascination with the English language and the way words connect. After hearing the story-rap of Dana Dane’s “Nightmares,” the emcee has been obsessed with telling stories through his rhymes, allowing the listener to close their eyes and visualize the aural scenes. A master of the English language, his rapid-fire flow has been imitated by countless rappers.

Mr. Metaphor – While the half-French, half-American emcee graduated with a vocal major from LaGuardia Arts High School, rapping has always been his true passion. As a teenager, the emcee would spend countless hours coming up with clever wordplay and metaphors, making him one of the top battlers in the NYC hip-hop community. While in another hip-hop group, Metaphor was recruited by Block to form Wordamouth and eventually Brooklyn Academy.

The Old bio

Having developed a hardcore fan base worldwide from NY to Holland to Australia, 3 MC’s born out of the womb of hip hop are taking the gems they have learned and reaping the benefits. Brooklyn is the borough, Academy is a curriculum, a “school” made of professional musicians, advanced lyricists, and pure golden age hip hop. From the streets to the stage to the studio these artists are creating the re-birth of a golden era.~The combination of French, Puerto Rican, and black backgrounds creates a tri-lingual and tri-cultural feel identical to none.

Being raised in the same neighborhood of Park Slope Brooklyn, Pumpkinhead, Mr. Met, and Block McCloud have all developed highly skilled crafts in recording, engineering, rapping, singing, and song writing. If you’re looking for banging production, hot hooks, catchy flows, and “classic” material then look no further then the Brooklyn Academy.

Individually and as a group these gentlemen have made quite a name for themselves Worldwide. They’ve recorded with and/or produced for such artists as Talib Kweli, Sean Price, Killah Priest, Jedi Mind Tricks, Immortal Technique, Jean Grae, Sadat X, and many more. They’ve performed all over the world and shared the stage with Erykah Badu, D’angelo, Boot Camp Click, The Goo Goo Dolls, Mos Def, Fat Joe, Nore, Big Daddy Kane, The Roots, AZ etc. They are true “artists”, continuously innovating new styles of lyricism and songwriting that have been emulated and imitated by tens of thousands of aspiring MC’s around the world. They made their initial impact in the early nineties with songs like “Dynamic” and “Wack MC’s” by Pumpkinhead (Makin’ Records) and “Famous Last Words” by Block and Mr. Met as Wordamouth (Lyricist Lounge Vol.1/Rawkus Records).

“The Highlight: Wordamouth lace up their reeboks to kick the ancient bee bop. Two cats that rap like they have cement mixers in their mouths The Lo-Fi Allstars!” –Rolling Stone

Eventually these artists merged and released “Russian Roulette” with Thirstin Howl the 3rd (Fat Beats Records) and “Skeme Team: Plan A” ( 321 Records) and forever carved a niche in Hip Hop as those gritty, grimy, gruesome MC’s from Brooklyn! Skeme Team’s Plan A went on to reach #46 on Billboards Hottest Rap Single and got regular spins on Hot 97.

In a recent Elemental Magazine article, Daniel Muessig writes “ Here is where Brooklyn Academy rose to prominence Their grimy, scheming personas, made them the kind of rappers one wouldn’t want to face in a cipher or run across in a dark alley and had it not been for 3-2-1 Records folding after putting out the (3-2-1’s biggest selling..) Skeme Team single then the Hip Hop world would have been properly versed in the ways of Block and his supremely talented Family long ago”.

They set off to find themselves musically and as individuals and each member has independently gone on to achieve commercial success in this industry, reaffirming there place in hip hop history.

Never truly disbanding as a group it would be incorrect to call this a reunion but more a revival of one of the most talented groups of MC’s to grace the radio waves. DJ Enuff of Hot 97 is currently spinning Sean Price’s latest release “Mess you Made” which features Block Mccloud doing what he’s done for so many others(Jean Grae, Jedi Minds..) in this industry: Writing and Singing the catchiest of hooks. Now He and his Brooklyn Academy brethren are putting their many talents, their experience and focus into the one group that means more to them than any other: Their own.

They are the red wine of rap, getting stronger with age. They are exactly what this industry needs right now: Originality, True Life, Love and Respect for the Culture and the Experience and Talent to convey it to the masses. They are Takin’ them Back to School.

They are The Brooklyn Academy.

Pumpkinhead
Pumpkinhead Born Robert Alan Diaz In Brooklyn N.Y. On Sept. 17th, 1975 did not know what his future had in store for him. The Son of a single hard working mother grew up in Park Slope Brooklyn with younger sister and mother in a 2 bedroom apartment, PH started getting into Hip Hop in the early 80's movies like Beat Street , Breakin and Wildstyle inspired this B-boy to embrace the culture to the fullest and be the best at what he does today. Starting as a 10 yr. Old B-boy PH would battle local crews alone in search of acceptance for having heart and skill for his age. Finally gaining acclaim for his breaking and popping skills he quickly moved on to his next goal , which was to be an M.C. After Hearing Dana Danes Nightmares PH started penning little raps during his 6th Grade Language art class where he was the top Poet. Pumpkinhead first leaped on to the Underground Hip Hop scene when a friend of Pumpkinhead went to WKCR'S Bobitto Garcia's weekly basketball radio show Trash talk and handed Bobitto a promo that PH had created for Bobitto's Underground Hip Hop radio show that was on air every thursday night along with the legendary D.J. Stretch Armstrong , They played the promo for 8 weeks straight. After New York's first tastse of this underground legend they demanded more , So PH joined the stable of Makin' Records which was home to the group Natural Resource (Jean Grae) and The Bad Seed . Ph's first 12" single was Dynamic b/w It's over and went . 1 in the Hits , Gavin and Cmj charts the record was embraced by all. Block Mccloud

Block Mccloud, born Ismael Diaz In Brooklyn, N.Y On Sept, 22nd, 1971 was born to be a singer and a poet. Like his father before him and his fathers father, he had been born a natural improviser of word with an amazing talent for singing. Unlike his father Ismael Senior who sang Salsa with Tito Rojas in there native town of Humacao Puerto Rico, Blocks passion was rhyming. His mom Aida had him singing in street festivals in Red Hook and Columbia St., Brooklyn at the tender age of 6. It wasn’t until he was about 9 that he’d heard songs like “The Message” and “ Rappers Delight” that he decided he’d try his hand at “M.C.ing and B-Boying. He bought his first pair of Suede Pumas, Lees, and a name Belt, and the rest as they say is history. Block would spend the next 10 yrs making a name for himself on the underground circuit. He’d gone to high school with Jarobi of Tribe~ Called Quest fame and Talib Kweli, He’d battled Mos Def and burned him, Cyphered with Super Natural, Das Efx, Leaders of the new School and recorded with Cella Dwellas,Lord Have Mercy. He’d eventually start The Brooklyn Academy, “one of” …his.”.most important contributions to hip hop”(Elemental Magazine)…and this crew would forever change the face of Underground Hip Hop and Lyricism as a whole. Block Mccloud is a True Brooklyn Lyricist in the tradition of Big Daddy Kane and Rakim who are two of his biggest influences. Big Daddy Kane recently shouted him out on stage at the infamous Rock Steady Showcase in Newark. He sought out and recruited MC’s who he felt personified True Hip Hop Lyricism. Pumpkinhead, Mr. Met, and Block Mccloud would go on to record countless cult classics such as the Block co-produced “The Con Artists” under the surname Skeme Team which hit #46 on Billboards Hottest Rap Single. DJ Enuff gave this song steady rotation on his Friday night Hot 97 show. Some more~ “Famous Last Words” could be found on The Lyricist Lounge Compilation Vol.1 which Jean Grae claims she heard on the radio while taking a shower in South Africa 2 yrs ago and responded “ I thought block had broken into my hotel room”. Rolling Stone Magizine called it “The highlight” of the album. Evolving with Hip Hop as it transcended subgenres, including the Zulu beads, political lyrical content, and the bling bling era, he was motivated by the emphasis placed on overt consumption to record his own critically acclaimed solo album “Spitting Image” which featured Killah Priest and others. He has grown from MC and B-Boy to CEO(Brooklyn Academy Productions/ Records) and Producer( Jean Grae’s “Code Red”, King Syze’s “Global Warming”,to Engineer (Jean Grae-Attack of the Attacking Things LP, Pumpkinhead- A Beautiful Mind) and Singer (Jedi Mind Tricks-Outlive The War, Sean Price- Mess You Made) to Songwriter and Hook master(wrote choruses for Jean Grae , Sean price, Thirstin Howl, Soul Purpose, DIabolique, MF Grimm, Killah Priest, Sha Stimuli, Poison Pen and more). He’s toured the Americas, Canada, Europe, known worldwide as captain hook for his catchy choruses. He’s shared the stage with The Goo Goo Dolls, Erykah Badu, KRS one, CL Smoothe, Nore, Big Pun, Fat Joe, The Duck Down Family. His music has been featured in Movies and TV (Quatro Nova, Boriqua Bond, The N Word(TRIO), Interscope: The Next(Showtime)), and the family legacy continues with his rapping son Lego(14yrs) who opened up for Slick Rick(Southpaw), Bran Nubians(SOB’s), Rakim(BB Kings) and his modeling daughter(5yrs) who has appeared in Dreft Adds, Baby Magazine and is currently the Tylenol Infant drops baby. Innovator and Originator, Passionate Artist and Hardnosed Businessman, Child of the Culture and a Father to its Future, he continues to breathe life into a culture that he believes needs more of what he has to offer… a breathe of fresh air, a welcome change, and an undieing respect for this Music.

Mr.Metaphor
Mr. Met, a native New York City born musician raised in Park Slope Brooklyn, was introduced to the culture of hip hop in the mid 80’s.~ Being half French and half Jewish Met came up battling on street corner ciphers and local MC competitions with a mission to prove himself as an mc. Met attended LaGuardia “Fame” high school of the performing arts as a vocal major in the late 80’s and began searching for a path to follow in music. As a concert pianist in the 50’s, Met’s grandmother was a big inspiration and attribution to his natural ability to play keys and produce music. Big Daddy Kane was Met’s first influence to writing rhymes. Kane said “you could put wings on your tongue and still couldn’t say nothing fly” and met thought it was the most genius thing he had ever heard. After he heard that line, met sacrificed every minute of his day thinking of clever punch lines, metaphors, and wordplay to show off to the neighborhood hip hop heads. This is where the name “Mr. Metaphor” was born. He started calling radio stations like Martin Moore and DJ Meham, Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito, and any other radio station he could get his voice heard on. He began making a local buzz for himself. After internal conflict with his first group “SUB 4”, met decided to accept the invite from the other local Park Slope group making noise “Zooty Zoo”, and joined forces with Building Block (Block McCloud) and Will Tell. The 3 artists formed the group Word A Mouth and went on to be featured on the Lyricist Lounge Volume 1 album hosted by De La Soul. This Album was released in the golden era of hip hop and opened up an audience to Mr. Met so detrimental to his success today. Soon the legendary Pumpkinhead, another Park Slope native MC came into the picture and the chemistry between the artists was like none other. They formed the Brooklyn Academy and went on to release a number of independently released records that topped college radio, billboard and dance charts.

Mr Met released his first and only independently produced album “Metropolis” in 2005. Experimental and mainly self produced, met composed a play list of no sample songs he created on the Triton Keyboard, playing different melodies and chords, singing his hooks, and experimenting with his bi-lingual capability to rap and sing in French. That same year met traveled to Cannes France with the Lyricist Lounge for the “Midem” conference, and made some strong business contacts with many international music companies around the world. Along with experimenting on the musical side of hip hop, met decided to step into the business side of the entertainment business and began event coordinating and throwing parties. He started Remarcable Entertainment which has now gained a very respectful reputation for its brand. Met has worked with Funk Master Flex of NY’s hot 97, DJ Gold finger, DJ Red Alert, Stretch Armstrong, Rich Medina, and has gained relationships with hundreds of DJ’s in NYC.~ As a solo artist met has toured England, Canada, France, and has performed in Vermont, Albany. New Jersey, and countless venue’s in NYC. As a member of Brooklyn Academy Met has toured all over the world and countless cities up and down the east coast and the Midwest. Met is a highly respect artists. He is your favorite artist’s favorite artist. His witty lines, advanced flows, bi-lingual raps, and incomparable ability to write a song separates him from the over saturation of mc’s in the hip hop game. He is a true professional song composer made for the entertainment business.
